Sejauh Mata Memandang Continues to Raise Ocean Awareness Through the “Larung” Collection at Jakarta Fashion Week 2026

Jakarta Fashion Week (JFW) has become a recurring meeting point for the Indonesian fashion scene. At JFW 2026, Sejauh Mata Memandang returned to Dewi’s Luxe Market under the theme Echoes of the Universe. Following last year’s collaboration with Eko Nugroho, presented at Dewi Fashion Knights, which addressed social and political concerns, we return with “Larung” collection as an expression of grief over the increasingly threatened state of the ocean, alongside a hope that care and awareness may continue to grow.

The ocean, which has long sustained life, now faces mounting challenges. Pollution, overexploitation, millions of tons of plastic waste, declining biodiversity, and damaged coral reefs remain present realities across many of Indonesia’s coastal regions. These conditions remind us that the ocean asks for deeper attention, patience, and collective care.

This concern is not new to us. In 2019, Sejauh Mata Memandang launched “Laut Kita”, a collection that spoke about oceans increasingly burdened by single-use plastic waste. Six years later, little has changed. Chitra Subyakto, Founder and Creative Director of Sejauh Mata Memandang, continues to feel the same unease when witnessing the ocean’s decline, endangered fish species, and corals losing their colors. Through “Larung,” which means to let something drift into the water as a form of prayer, tribute, or hope, Chitra invites us to pause, reflect on what is happening to the ocean, and rekindle hope for its recovery.

This presentation features 30 looks, including kebaya, shirts, jackets, skirts, pants, hand-drawn batik fabrics, scarves, to outerwear. Shades of blue run through the collection, echoing the presence of the sea, while white represents purity and new beginnings, and also serves as a reminder of corals turning white due to ecosystem damage. New motifs inspired by marine life such as stingrays, manta rays, whales, turtles, as well as various fish, plants, and corals blend harmoniously with Sejauh’s signature motifs like “Ombak Laut,” “Bunga Laut,” “Ayam,” “Onde,” and “Tambal.”

Created in collaboration with Felix Tjahjadi as co-creative director and the artisans of Studio Sejauh, the collection continues our practice of circular and responsible production. Most materials are sourced through upcycling processes, using patchwork techniques that bring together fabric scraps, imperfect fabrics, and deadstock from Sejauh Mata Memandang and Sharon Jap Atelier. Natural materials such as cotton and tencel are explored through hand-drawn batik, screen printing, and digital printing, alongside jacquard woven fabrics made from recycled yarn derived from garment waste. The majority of the pieces are dyed using OEKO-TEX certified synthetic dyes that are safe for the skin and the environment.

The presentation concluded with a special performance by Dita Karang. An Indonesian soloist based in Seoul, she rose to prominence as a member of the K-Pop group SECRET NUMBER and is recognized as the first Indonesian woman to break into the K-Pop industry. A graduate of The American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York, Dita has recently embarked on her solo journey with the release of her single Love So Sweet on October 24.

In “Larung,” Dita performed choreography by Siko Setyanto together with Sahabat Sejauh. Her presence functioned as an extension of the collection’s narrative, translating  “Larung” through movement that emphasized restraint and sincerity. “Collaborating with Sejauh Mata Memandang through ‘Larung’ is very special for me. Besides music, dance has been my passion since childhood. I feel honored to be one of the voices reminding us to care for and nurture the ocean that has given life to us all,” she shared.

The show was accompanied by Sahabat Sejauh and other creative collaborators. Stage music was composed by Kasimyn of Gabber Modus Operandi, who also re-arranged Hindia’s song Secukupnya for this showcase. The atmosphere and narrative of “Larung” were supported by 3D visuals by Randy Rais. Accessories by Jewel Rocks, handmade from discarded fishing nets from Sumba with beading and macrame techniques, were integrated into the looks. The collection was further enriched with handcrochet creations such as earrings, bralets, accessories, and sea-creature-shaped bags by Naradiya, Volen Art Space, and Cusia by Shibiru.
